Thomas F. Verran, age 78, a lifelong resident of Salem, passed away January 13, 2023. He was born on July 23, 1944 in Livonia, Michigan; son of Fred and Laura (Mc Avoy) Verran. He graduated from South Lyon High School; Class of 1962. In 1965, Thomas was drafted into the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War.
Thomas grew up on his family’s farm in Salem where he learned to appreciate the dynamics of running a farm. Upon his discharge from the Army, he returned home and chose a career with the Washtenaw County Road Commission as a Truck Driver. In 2000, Thomas retired and devoted his time to enjoying his hobbies.
He spent most of his free time in his garage woodworking. He created beautiful cutting boards, picture frames, and jewelry boxes. Thomas also liked tinkering around his property and driving his tractor. He was a natural fix-it guy and spent many hours fixing his old farm equipment and helping his friends and neighbors do the same. Thomas liked being outdoors and boating. He will be remembered for his woodworking talents and his unsolicited generosity.
Thomas is survived by his sons, Dale (Jane) Verran and John Verran; his brother Dale (Mary Lou) Verran; and his grandchildren, Lindsey Verran, Jake Verran, Dylan Verran, and Thomas Verran. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Private services were held. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Wounded Warrior Project , PO Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516 or to Shriners Hospitals for Children , 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, Florida 33607.
