Thomas J. Campbell

April 10, 1940 — August 4, 2021

Thomas J. Campbell, age 81, a longtime resident of Northville, passed away on August 4, 2021. He was born April 10, 1940 in Detroit, Michigan; the only son of John Thomas and Anne Regina (nee Finley) Campbell. Tom graduated from University of Detroit High School, Class of 1958.  He proudly served his country in the United States Coast Guard. He attended Wayne State University and graduated in 1968 with a degree in Journalism.

Tom was united in marriage to Susan T. Pilatowicz on March 3, 1984, and they were an inspiring example of enduring love and commitment for over 37 years.

Tom was a  radio newscaster and business editor at WJR for 35 years. He received many awards of excellence for his work from the Associated Press and the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, culminating in a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010.

One of his finest characteristics was being selfless, thus Tom was often recognized for helping others begin and flourish in their own broadcasting careers.

Tom was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was kind, witty, hilarious, incredibly smart, humble, and very generous. Tom loved his family unconditionally and had a bond with his grandchildren that was unparalleled. When Tom wasn’t with his family, he could be found on a golf course playing as many as 3 times a week after he retired.

He is survived by his loving wife Susan; his children, Sharon (Tom) Bayerl, Patrick Campbell, Timothy Campbell, John (Kathryn) Campbell, and Megan (John) Johnson; his grandchildren, Claire (Josué), Scott, Tim, Caity, Ryan, Justin, Jack, Grace, Nate, Shane, Braden, Will, Tommy, Luke, Jack, and one more on the way.
