Theresa M. Schulte

March 21, 1935 — November 22, 2021

Theresa M. Schulte, age 86, of Northville, formerly of Dearborn, passed away on November 22, 2021. She was born on March 21, 1935 in Notre-Dame du Nord, Quebec, Canada; daughter of Lionel and Simone (Matteau) Maisonneuve. Theresa was united in marriage to John E. Schulte on April 21, 1956; they spent 65 loving years together as husband and wife.

She was the owner of Draperies by Theresa, a custom window covering company, for over 32 years. While taking a class on drapery making at Dearborn High, Theresa created draperies for her own home. After seeing her beautiful work, several friends asked her to make draperies for them as well.

Word quickly spread about her talent and Draperies by Theresa was created. Theresa ran a successful company providing her clients draperies, cornice boards, swags, and other window coverings. She had several high-end clients including Nicklas Lindstrom and several other Red Wings. In 1991, she was honored with an award for Drapery of the Year in dining rooms at ADO Design Showcase. Near the end of her career, she passed on her wealth of knowledge by going back and instructing the original class that started her own legacy.

Theresa was a member of Northville Garden Club and Detroit Workroom Association.  She was an excellent seamstress and in addition to the custom draperies she made beautiful clothing, including her daughter’s clothes while she was growing up.  Theresa had a very active social life and loved to attend weddings. She and her husband enjoyed ballroom dancing and went to dinner dances all around the area.  She was also a patron of the arts and had season tickets to the DSO as well as Tipping Point Theater. An avid golfer, she played in many different leagues throughout the years. Theresa liked to travel and take cruises; she even fulfilled a dream by visiting Paris.  She was a fantastic baker and made delicious pies and cookies that she shared with family and friends.  It was not unusual for her pies to be mailed to loved ones across the country.  She liked to relax with a cup of tea several times a day, which was always a piping hot cup of Red Rose.  Theresa loved her family and cherished the memories they made. She especially adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband John “Jack” Schulte; her children, Dianne (Bob) Mateja and Frank (Valerie) Schulte; her grandchildren, Melissa Dewyer, Chris (Heather) Mateja, Amy (Lee) Reff, Kim (Justin) Landers, and Jamie (Matt) Lynch; her great grandchildren, Jack, Matt, Grayson, Lucian, Steven, Ari, Skyler, and brand new baby Gisele; and her siblings, Gilles Maisonneuve, Raisa Lilley, Gerare (Betty) Maisonneuve, Gisele Beaupre, Yvon (Vickie) Maisonneuve, Lucien (Barbara) Maisonneuve, Florence Pivato, Robert Maisonneuve, Paul (Julie) Maisonneuve, and Jacques (Valerie) Mainsonneuve; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers Alfred Maisonneuve, Maurice Maisonneuve, and Aurele Maisonneuve.

The visitation will be held Tuesday, December 7, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. until Noon with the funeral service beginning at Noon at Casterline Funeral Home, 122 West Dunlap, Northville.  She will be laid to rest at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at 12:30 p.m.
