Sol P. Baltimore

Age 95, of Lathrup Village, formerly of Detroit, passed away September 2, 2022. He was born on July 19, 1927 in Highland Park, Michigan; son of Nathan and Rose (nee Toren) Baltimore. Sol proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, retiring as a Colonel in 1987.  Following his enlistment, he attended Kent State University on the G.I. Bill and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism.  He continued his education at Wayne State University with post graduate work in environmental studies.  Sol was united in marriage to Susan Perkins on August 20, 1960; they spent 52 years devoted to one another until her death on March 6, 2012.

Throughout the years, Sol worked in environmental communications with various companies, including non-profit organizations and the automotive industry.  His most notable position was with Wayne State University where he contributed to the development of an environmental studies curriculum for the School of Engineering.  He taught well into his 80’s before retiring.

Sol, a true philanthropist, was active with many organizations over the years, including MOAA (Military Officers Association of America), KWVA (Korean War Veterans Association) of both the U.S. and Canada, VFW (Veteran of Foreign Wars), Engineering Society of Detroit and the Brain Injury Association.  A leader among his peers, he served on the boards of many organizations and was acknowledged with countless awards for his dedication.  He was also a member of Temple Israel in West Bloomfield.  Sol was an avid reader, who preferred crime novels and history books.  He had an impressive coin and stamp collection, and an interest in ham radio and journalism.  Sol enjoyed visiting museums, attending firework displays, and going to the Berkley Car Cruise each year.  An enthusiastic storyteller, he had a fantastic sense of humor.  He loved to eat, especially Chinese food and was a loyal customer of the Golden Fleece Restaurant in Detroit since it opened.  Sol was a staunch supporter of his children’s endeavors and adored his grandchildren.  He loved spending time with family and cherished all the memories they made.

Sol is survived by his loving children, Charles Baltimore and Jennifer (Chris) DiCicco; his daughter-in-law, Susie Ayer; his son-in-law, Tom Dogonski; his grandchildren, Maxfield DiCicco, Penelope DiCicco, Ray (Dana) Ayer, Elizabeth Ayer, Ben (Runa) Ayer, David (Stacey) Dogonski, and Derek (Tanya) Dogonski; and his great grandchildren, Azalea, Ezra, Makenna, Ean, Carrie, and Sam.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Susan Baltimore, his stepdaughter Allysan Dogonski, his stepson Ray Ayer, and his parents.

The visitation will be held Sunday, September 11, 2022 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.  A funeral service will be held Monday, September 12, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Casterline Funeral Home, 122 West Dunlap, Northville.  Rabbi Marla Hornsten from Temple Israel in West Bloomfield will officiate the service.  He will be laid to rest next to his wife at Beth El Memorial Park in Livonia.
