Ruby S. Barrow
Age 98, of Ann Arbor, formerly a longtime resident of Northville, passed away on April 28, 2021. She was born September 28, 1922 in Kingston, Michigan; daughter of William and Sylvia (nee Shaw) Bennett.
Ruby was an ambitious and independent young woman, and after graduating from high school, she set off to explore the world at a time when many women felt limited to pursue their passions. Ruby earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Michigan State Normal College which is now known as Eastern Michigan University. She continued her studies at University of Michigan where she received a master’s degree in education. She also attended Grace Theological Seminary in Wynona Lake, Indiana for three years where she studied theology as well as Greek, Hebrew, and Latin.
During WWII Ruby was a Rosie the Riveter and worked at Detroit Diesel as an inspector measuring parts. Following college, she went to work as an elementary school teacher. Most of her career was spent at Livonia Public Schools teaching first and second grades, she retired in 1985.
Ruby was a member of First Baptist Church in Northville. Her faith was an enduringly important part of her life and brought her much peace and many friendships. During college, her connection to InterVarsity Christian Fellowship provided her with a rich social life and many fond memories. At a later point in her life she took a meaningful trip to the Holy Lands with other members of her church.
Raised on a farm, Ruby remained connected to working the land. She enjoyed gardening and caring for the acreage she lived on in Northville Township and took pride in keeping up her home and property. Ruby grew apple, peach, and pear trees, as well as grapes. She also had a beautiful peony bed and a showy display of lilies that lined her driveway each summer. For many years her display of giant dahlias was jaw dropping.
One of Ruby’s greatest joys was her family. She adored her grandchildren and loved spending time with them. Ruby was actively engaged in playing with them and always did whatever they wanted to do. She kept tabs on what her extended family was doing and liked to attend family reunions. She appreciated having a large family and valued what being part of that meant. Ruby was a beloved mother and grandmother; she will be missed by all who knew her.
Ruby is survived by her loving sons, Paul (Susan) Barrow and Allen (Patricia) Barrow; her grandchildren, Olivia, Ethan, Nigel, and Shelby; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Neil Bennett, Ivan Bennett, Douglas Bennett, Ruth Shear, Amos Bennett, and Reita Tait.
