Rita M. Byrd, age 96, a longtime resident of Northville, passed away on November 14, 2024. She was born on May 24, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois; daughter of Ralph and Grace (Brewer) Hunt. She graduated from Mundelein Cathedral High School, class of 1946. Rita was united in marriage to the love of her life, Robert G. Byrd, on August 23, 1947; they spent 45 years devoted to one another until his death on August 27, 1992.
Rita was a devoted homemaker who poured her heart into raising her nine children and caring for a lively menagerie of animals, including dogs, cats, gerbils, ponies, and the occasional bird. She made her home a haven for anyone in need and there was always an extra place at the table. Rita’s caregiving extended beyond her immediate family as she lovingly cared for her own mother for over a decade, demonstrating her unwavering dedication to family.

Rita found solace outdoors, where her gardens served as her sanctuary and meditation. From dawn to dusk, she could often be found tending to the 1.5 acres she lovingly cultivated, filled with vibrant flowers, lush flower beds, and serene woods. Her meticulous care brought harmony to every corner, from the blooming gardens to the perfectly manicured path that meandered through the trees. Rita was incredibly artistic and though she was unable to formally pursue her passion for art, her home became her canvas, showcasing her talent through interior design.
