Richard A. Coolman, age 87, lifelong resident of Northville, passed away November 19, 2020. He was born on November 27, 1932 in Northville, Michigan; son of Robert and Marjorie (nee Horan) Coolman. He was united in marriage to Jean Coolman (nee Dodge) on August 20, 1955; they were devoted to one another for 59 years until her death on November 19, 2014.
Richard graduated from Northville High School; Class of 1950. He continued his education at Wooster College and completed his undergraduate at Michigan State University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business management. He later earned a master’s degree in Educational Administration from Wayne State University. Richard worked as a principal for Beverly Elementary School in Birmingham for 22 years. He retired at the age of 50 and wanted his next position to be one where he could walk to work each day. He took a job with the Sawmill in Northville where he worked in accounts payable for 20 years.
Richard was an avid golfer; played many different courses in the area and took a trip each year with friends to play Pinehurst in South Carolina. He enjoyed being at his cottage on St. Joseph Island in Canada where he would spend his days reading. Richard liked to walk around town each day, it was something he could do that was good for his health and his wallet. He adored his granddaughter and cherished the time they spent together, reading or at Sunday dinner where they would demand dessert in unison.
Richard is survived by his loving children, Michael Coolman and Lorie (Bob) Boshoven; and his granddaughter Elizabeth Boshoven. He was preceded in death by his wife Jean Coolman, his parents, and his sister Rebecca Muller.
