Ramon R. Kugler, age 86, longtime resident of Northville, passed away on February 22, 2024. He was born February 10, 1938 in Highland Park, Michigan; son of Raymond and Alice (Foxworthy) Kugler. Ramon was united in marriage to Carolyn Jean French on August 5, 1961; they spent 62 years lovingly devoted to one another.
Ramon graduated from Redford High School; class of 1956. Following high school, he attended the University of Detroit where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education followed by a master’s degree from Wayne State University in guidance and counseling. While he attended the University of Detroit he was active with the Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity and the Flintlocks Fraternity. He later earned an Education Specialist with a focus on educational psychology from Wayne State University.
Ramon proudly served his country in the United States Army Military Police Corp. While stationed at Ft. Sill in Oklahoma he achieved the rank of First Lieutenant and had the opportunity to meet with President Harry J. Truman. One of his more memorable assignments was guarding James Meredith, the first African American student at University of Mississippi.
Ramon began his teaching career at Bentley High School in 1961 as a high school history and psychology teacher. In 1967, he took a position as a counselor with Stevenson High School where he found fulfillment in making genuine connections with the students. A fantastic listener, his laid-back demeanor and non-judgmental attitude made it easy to form one on one relationships with students while diplomatically speaking to parents. Ramon took advantage of his workday ending early and cherished the time he was able to care for his wife and daughters.
History was at the forefront of many of Ramon’s hobbies and collections. He was well versed in antiques and turned his vast knowledge and love of history into a side business pricing and working estate sales. Ramon had an extensive collection of depression glass, pottery, and fiesta-ware. He was also a stamp collector and would carefully choose stamps to mail things that were geared toward the receiver. Ramon was a self-taught watercolor painter. Ramon liked to cook and for many years did the grocery shopping and cooked all the meals for his family. He was an avid reader and enjoyed playing golf and racquetball. Above all else, Ramon loved his family. He was a great dad, a supportive husband, and an adoring Papa; he will be missed by all who loved him.
Ramon is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn Kugler; his daughters, Alison Kugler and Kristen (Tim) Unti; and his grandchildren, Alexandra, Andrea, Ava, Scott, and Jack. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Private family services will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial contributions to the American Red Cross.
