Michael J. O'Brien

September 19, 1984 — April 18, 2025

Michael J. O’Brien, age 40, of Northville, died unexpectedly on April 18, 2025. He was born on September 19, 1984; son of John and Karel (Kortas) O’Brien. Mickey, as he was known to his family and friends, graduated from Northville High School, class of 2002. He continued his education at Schoolcraft College where he earned his associates degree.

Mickey’s greatest joy was spending time with his family. Nothing made his day more complete than being surrounded by the people he loved. Holidays and birthdays were especially meaningful to him—cherished opportunities to celebrate and share laughter with those closest to his heart. One of his proudest moments was being asked to be the Godfather of his niece, Parker, an honor he carried with deep pride. Family meant everything to Mickey, and his love for them ran deep.

He shared a special bond with the family dog, Flynn, who gave him endless companionship and unconditional love. Mickey was the kind of person who made friends easily and nurtured lasting relationships. He loved his hometown of Northville and found comfort and joy in its small-town charm. Whether enjoying live music at The Winery, or downtown, Guernseys, or playing pool at the Wagon Wheel, Mickey felt at home.

He had a sharp mind and loved putting it to work during challenging games of Jeopardy or Scrabble, at which he excelled. A true sports enthusiast, Mickey was a devoted fan of the MSU Spartans, Detroit Tigers, Lions, Red Wings and Pistons. Many of his favorite memories were made watching games with his best friend, his dad, John, and his brother, Jeremy. And when his team won or made a great play, everyone around him knew to expect a celebratory “Knuckles.”

Mickey also loved being outdoors. He found peace on the golf course and in the quiet beauty of Hines Park, taking long rides to spot deer and wild turkeys. A passionate collector, Mickey was always on the hunt for the perfect coin, baseball card, fossil, or antique.

Music was another of his passions. His playlist spanned generations and genres—from the Grateful Dead and Willie Nelson to Elton John, Bob Seger, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Billy Joel, and even his favorite rap tracks. He could recite endless facts about his favorite bands and loved revisiting scenes from his favorite movies. Mickey lived with heart and humor.

He pursued his passions fully and faced life’s challenges with courage. Despite setbacks and health struggles, he remained hopeful and determined, always saying, “I know I can do this!” His kind heart, deep appreciation for others, and infectious laughter left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Mickey will be remembered fondly, missed deeply, and loved forever.

Mickey is survived by his parents John and Karel O’Brien; his sister Molly (Kyle) Corcoran; his brother Jeremy O’Brien; and his niece Parker. He is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
