Masako was born on March 3, 1941 in Okinawa, Japan to Goro and Gozei (Yonamine) Uema. In 1968, she married the love of her life, Frank H. Yuhas, and they eventually settled down in Taylor, Michigan. Their marriage lasted 52 years and was full of love until the very end.
Masako’s eagerness to learn and natural ability made her good at almost everything. Her backyard in Taylor was always filled with beautiful roses, peony, and lilac bushes, in addition to a small vegetable garden. The vegetables she grew were sometimes mistaken for weeds by her husband much to the amusement of her two daughters. Masako was a wonderful cook and baker; she always made delicious food for her family and in a pinch could make a meal out of anything. Many of her special recipes including Swedish meatballs, chicken paprikas, apple pie and Christmas cookies have been passed down to her children and grandchildren. She worked as a sewing machine operator making boat, helicopter and airplane covers for Shrink Wrap International in Brownstown Township, MI, retiring after 30 years with the company. At first, the idea of sitting back and enjoying retirement was a hard thing for Masako to accept. She loved to be busy and developed many hobbies over the years. An incredibly talented seamstress, she could make a sewing pattern from scratch, on top of being able to knit and crochet with expert skill. She liked to play bingo, slot machines at the casino, and card games, especially euchre and pinochle. However, despite her constant energy and love of independence, she also appreciated the peace and quiet of fishing and the relaxation of an old movie in the evening, and she loved watching TV with her husband at all hours of the day.
At the age of 79, Masako passed away peacefully at her home in Northville on September 2, 2020. She is survived by her beloved husband, Frank Yuhas; her children, Kiki (John) Kargilis, Eisaku (Yoko) Kishimoto, and Susanne (Herbert) Els; eight grandchildren; and her sister Yoko Higa. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother. Masako was truly loved by her family and friends and will be missed by all who knew her.
