Mary Anne Callahan, age 88, of Northville passed away September 1, 2021. She was born August 5,1933 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of John and Agnes ( Redmond ) Callahan.
Mary Anne began her teaching career at St. Philomena Elementary School and later transferred to Dominican High School in Detroit while serving as a nun. In 1970 she was awarded Teacher of the Year in a Detroit Free Press contest and won a trip around the world. Shortly after, she left the convent and began teaching for Southfield Public Schools. She taught for many years at Levey Junior High, eventually retiring from Brace Lederle Elementary School.
Mary Anne, a devout Catholic, belonged to Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church. She was a member of the VFW Post 4012 Ladies Auxiliary and the Northville Moose Lodge where she enjoyed playing cards, especially euchre. Mary Anne was an avid reader and loved watching Hallmark movies. She continued her travels to Australia, Ireland, and Alaska. Mary Anne spent many summers in Caseville on Lake Huron. She loved animals, enjoyed birdwatching, and adored her cocker spaniel Buffy.
A loving and loyal friend to so many, Mary Anne will be missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother John Callahan. A funeral mass will be held Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at 11am, instate at 10:30am at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 133 Orchard Drive, Northville. She will be laid to rest at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield.
