Leland Maschmeyer, age 77, of Novi, a former longtime resident of Royal Oak, passed away on March 11, 2022. He was born July 5, 1944 in Paducah, Kentucky; son of Leland V. and Margaret C. (Acker) Maschmeyer. Leland graduated from Pershing High School in Detroit; class of 1962. He continued his education at the University of Michigan, graduating in 1966 with a Bachelor of Art degree from the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. Leland was united in marriage to Lillian on March 27, 1993; they were deeply devoted to each other until her death in 2003.
Leland was born blind but that did not hold him back from living his best life. He had a 43-year career at Wayne State University as a Computer Programmer. Respected by his colleagues for his intelligence and drive. Leland loved telling stories and listening to old radio programs. He was blessed with a beautiful singing voice and was a member of a song circle. His musical talent also shined when he played the autoharp. Leland was an amazing and dedicated husband, brother, uncle, stepfather, and friend.
He is survived by his sisters Judy Poole and Carolyn (Bill) Garlick; his stepson Benjamin Colkitt; his niece Judy Allen; his nephew Ryan Garlick; and his great niece Avery. He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 28, 2022 at 2pm, with a time of gathering beginning at 1pm, at the First United Methodist Church, 777 West 8 Mile Road, Northville. Memorial contributions would be appreciated to the Royal Oak Musicale .
