Laura A. Hicks
Age 102, a lifelong resident of Northville, passed away on October 30, 2022. She was born on October 23, 1920 in Salem Township, Michigan; daughter of Cass and Alberta (Thompson) Bolton. Laura graduated from Northville High School; Class of 1939. She was united in marriage to Fred Junior Hicks on March 25, 1942; they spent 77 loving years together as husband and wife until his death on June 15, 2019.
Just out of high school, Laura began working as a nurse for Dr. Russell Atchison at the Atchison Clinic on Dunlap in Northville. She worked in both the office, as well as accompanied him on house calls until 1946 when she and Junior began their family. After her children were grown, Laura began working for Long’s Plumbing in downtown Northville. She retired in 1982 after 20 years with the company.
Laura has been a member of First United Methodist Church since 1939. Active with the church, she volunteered wherever she could be of service including helping with the newsletter, and teaching Sunday school and bible study.
Laura was a devoted homemaker and took great pride in caring for her house and family. A wonderful cook and baker; her homemade cookies were always delicious. Laura also enjoyed sewing. he was a beautiful writer and kept in touch with friends and family via handwritten letters and cards. Laura was very supportive of downtown Northville, even as the town evolved, she remained loyal to the area. In 1988, she was honored as the Citizen of the Year for her outstanding service to the community. Her greatest joy in life was her family, she loved spending time with them and especially adored her grandchildren. Laura loved to play pretend and boardgames with her grandchildren, she also taught them how to cook and bake. She was a beloved wife, mom, grandma, sister, aunt, and friend; she will be missed by all who loved her.
Laura is survived by her loving children, Patricia (Fred) Fitch and Fred (Fran) Hicks; her grandchildren, Matt (Michelle) Fitch, Laura (Dale) Morey, Jackie (Mike Hay) Hicks, Amanda (Matt) Sheridan, and Christina (Tom) Hubbard; her great grandchildren, Chelsea (Clayton) George, Shelby (Keith) Whitmore, Madison Morey, Rebecca Fitch, Ashley Morey, Andrew Fitch, Colby Sheridan, Lillian Sheridan, William Hubbard, and Ravenna Hay; her great-great grandchildren, Kinsley Morey and Memphis George; and her nieces and nephews, Linda Koch, Robert (Ann) Bolton, and Lois (Jon Egbert) Bolton. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brother Douglas Bolton, and her sister-in-law Marge Bolton.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 11, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. with a time of gathering beginning at 10:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 777 W. Eight Mile Road, Northville.
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate memorial contributions to First United Methodist Church Endowment Fund or Charity of the Giver’s Choice.
