Karen E. Saxton

October 2, 1941 — February 13, 2025

Karen E. Saxton, age 83, of Northville, passed away February 13, 2025. She was born on October 2, 1941 in Detroit, Michigan; daughter of Toivo and Edna (Laitinen) Elsila. She graduated from Redford High School; class of 1958. Karen was married at the age of 18. She was married for 25 years and had 3 beautiful children. Karen was later united in marriage to Gerald N. Saxton on December 6, 1985; they spent 33 years lovingly devoted to one another until his death on August 1, 2018.

Karen had a long and successful career as a bookkeeper for Titanus. Known for her sharp mind and meticulous attention to detail, she excelled in managing finances and keeping accurate records. A dedicated and hardworking employee, Karen devoted over 20 years to her profession before retiring. She also worked in the real estate industry. Following her retirement, she continued to share her expertise by serving as treasurer of her homeowners’ association in Charlevoix, Michigan.

Karen was an avid golfer and a member of country clubs in both Fort Myers, Florida, and Charlevoix, Michigan, where she actively participated in numerous leagues. Well-known and well-liked, she was a friend to everyone on the course and clubhouse. Karen had a deep love for the water, and boating was an important part of her life. During summers in Charlevoix, she kept a boat docked outside her home on Lake Charlevoix, often embarking on overnight trips across Lake Michigan to destinations like Mackinac Island and Beaver Island. She even enjoyed the adventurous journey through the Straits of Mackinac and down the Atlantic Coast to Florida. In the winters, Karen lived in Fort Myers, Florida, where she also kept a boat docked outside her condo. Some of her most cherished moments were spent on the lake or ocean, fishing with her grandchildren. An avid traveler, Karen explored destinations around the world, with New Zealand and Australia holding a special place in her heart.

Karen’s adventurous spirit shone through every aspect of her life. Whether she was feeding the birds in her yard, relaxing with a glass of wine, knitting blankets for loved ones, line dancing with her chorus group, staying active in aerobics classes, or exploring new recipes in the kitchen, she embraced every moment with enthusiasm and joy. A talented cook and baker, Karen was known for her delicious homemade meals and her beloved cinnamon bundt cake, a favorite among family and friends. She shared her passion for cooking with her grandchildren, teaching them how to make pasties alongside her brother. Her zest for life extended to her many hobbies, including electric bike outings, skiing, cross-country skiing, jet skiing, and snowmobiling.

Karen had an impeccable sense of style, from interior design to fashion and even the beautiful cars she drove. Always ahead of the curve, she was known for her flawless appearance; perfectly styled hair and makeup, elegant clothing, and a signature perfume suited to every occasion. Karen was also a gracious host who loved to entertain, creating warm and welcoming gatherings. She adored her Shih-Poo, Kippy, who was a constant companion and object of her affection, especially after the death of her husband. Karen had a sharp wit and a wonderful sense of humor, never hesitating to speak her mind and occasionally ruffle a few feathers. Strong and opinionated, you always knew where you stood with her, whether you wanted to or not. Yet behind her bold and candid nature was a deep and unwavering love for her family and friends. Karen’s adventurous spirit, warmth, and love will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She leaves behind a legacy of unforgettable memories that will be cherished forever.

Karen is survived by her loving children, Julie (Roy) Rutherford, Sue (Dave) Diedrick, and Steve Grant; her stepdaughter, Laura (Richard) Bingham; her grandchildren, Cole (Lindsey) Rutherford, Jordan Diedrick, Haley Diedrick, Blake Rutherford, Brendan Bingham, Mackenzie (Nate) Czarnota, Hannah Grant, and Kayla Bingham; her great granddaughter, Valerie Rutherford; her brothers, Rick (Sandy) Elsila and Paul Elsila; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
