Joyce K. Whelan
Age 84, longtime resident of Northville, passed away on January 24, 2022. She was born on July 7, 1937 in Newark, New Jersey; daughter of Aldwin and Kathryn (Maher) Mascia. She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Lodi, New Jersey, Class of 1955. She worked for New Jersey Telephone from 1955 until 1959. Joyce was a long-time election volunteer, and also served on the Northville Tax Review Board. A devout catholic, she was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church for 43 years, serving as an usher alongside her husband. Joyce was an avid reader and shared her love for books with the customers at Bookstall on the Main where she worked for many years. She had a life-long passion for bridge, and enjoyed playing in several local groups where she made many lasting friendships.
Joyce loved to entertain and there was always room for one more at the table. She especially enjoyed the holidays - decorating, baking and shopping - and worked hard to make them special for those she loved. She hosted many wonderful pool parties for her large family and friends. Joyce was generous with her time, listening to those in need and sharing helpful advice. She most enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren around the country, attending sports and school events, telling stories, and playing cards and games.
Joyce was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, and will be missed by those who were blessed to know her.
Joyce is survived by her loving children, John (Donna) Whelan, Maureen (James) Decker, Mary Ellen (John) Sheehy, Kathleen Whelan, and Thomas (Michele) Whelan; her daughter-in-law, Maureen Whelan; her sisters, Maureen (John) Zisa, Kathleen (Tim) O’Brien, and Jeanne (William) Eakland; her grandchildren, Daniel, Kevin (Kim), Bridget (Calvin), Elizabeth, Caitlin, Elaine, William, John, Michael, James, Kathryn, Sean (Kerri), Ryan, Molly, Meaghan, Anne Marie, John, Cullen, Isabella, William, Chloe; and her great grandchildren, Shane, Nora, Caroline, Rory, Louisa, Jack, and Ellie.
