John G. Schuster, age 80, longtime resident of Northville, formerly of Redford, passed away on February 2, 2024. He was born on June 3, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan; son of John E. and Helen (Ogdie) Schuster.
John graduated from Edsel Ford High School in Dearborn, class of 1961. Following high school, he attended the University of Michigan Ann Arbor before transferring to Central Michigan University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education. John later earned a master’s degree and specialist degree in education from Eastern Michigan University. During high school and beyond, John worked at Greenfield Village as a horse drawn carriage driver leading to his love of horses which he passed on to his granddaughter.
John’s entire career in education was spent in the Birmingham Public School District. In 1966 John began his career in education as a math teacher. He then became an Assistant Principal and ultimately a Principal serving students and faculty at Berkshire Middle School, Seaholm High School, and Derby Middle School. Throughout his esteemed career as an educator, John’s kind and patient nature led him to be well respected among his peers and students alike.
John married the love of his life, Diane L. Hoffman on August 20, 1966; they spent 57 years lovingly devoted to one another. A man of God, John loved his Lord and was an active member of Covenant Community Church in Redford for many years. An incredibly supportive grandfather, he was instrumental in shaping each of his grandkid’s lives. John attended many of his grandchildren’s extracurricular activities and cheered them on at their sporting events. John enjoyed golfing and played in many leagues over the years. He was an avid reader and loved to garden and spend time outdoors.
Wise and intelligent, many students, neighbors, family, and friends looked to John as a mentor. John’s greatest joy came from his family, he was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend; he will be deeply missed by all who loved him.
John is survived by his loving wife, Diane; his daughters, Pamela (David) Adkins and Amy (Daniel) Borzymowski; his grandchildren, Bailey, Ava, John, and Lucas; his brothers, Lawrence (Barbara) Schuster, Curtis (Elizabeth) Schuster, and Bradly (Mari) Schuster; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A private family memorial service will be held.
