John R. Engler

John R. Engler, age 83, of Northville, formerly a longtime resident of Grosse Ile, passed away November 1, 2020. He was born on May 7, 1937 in Detroit, Michigan; son of Joseph and Julia (nee Habovcik) Engler.  John graduated from Cass Tech High School in Detroit with the class of 1955, where he was captain of the football and baseball teams.  An exceptional athlete, John played minor league baseball for the Cleveland Indians following his graduation.   He was united in marriage to Eileen R. Conway on February 23, 1963; they spent 57 years devoted to one another as husband and wife.

John proudly served his country in the United States Army.  He attended Wayne State University in Detroit where he studied business.  John worked for Security Bank and Trust Co. in Southgate for over 30 years.  He began his career with the company as a collector and retired in 1992 as President.  John was a pioneer in the credit industry and served on the Board of Directors for Visa USA.

John was an avid golfer and a longtime member of the Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club.  He had a passion for trading stocks and playing the stock market.  His greatest joy was spending time with his family.  He adored his grandchildren and liked to support them in their sports activities.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Eileen Engler; his children, Michael (Cleia) Engler, Kathleen (Andreas) Sapios, and John (Lisa) Engler; his grandchildren, Emily, Olivia, Aidan, and Jordan; and his sister, Julia Tanciar.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Amelia Gasiorek, and his brother Joseph Engler.

Private family services will be held.
