Joanne M. Dewey

Age 79, a longtime resident of Northville, passed away on January 17, 2021. She was born on May 8, 1941 in Detroit, Michigan; daughter of Edward W. and Catherine G. (nee Swartz) Hulbert.  She graduated from Dearborn High School; Class of 1959.  Following high school Joanne attended Albion College where she earned her degree in education.   She attended the University of Michigan earning her Master’s in Library Science.  Joanne was united in marriage to Thomas L. Dewey on December 22, 1967; they spent 53 loving years dedicated to one another.

Joanne was a devoted homemaker and loved being home to raise her son.  When he was older, she worked as a youth services librarian at the Northville Public Library for 10 years, retiring in 1998.  Joanne also volunteered her time with the Northville Youth Assistance mentoring three children in the program.

Joanne was a founding member of Meadowbrook Congregational Church where she sang in the choir for many years.   She was also a member of Michigan Questers and the Northville Garden Club.  A certified master gardener, Joanne had an elaborate garden at her home and took pride in helping to care for the flowers in the Northville community.  She loved to travel with her husband and family and especially enjoyed taking trips with her good friend Jan.  Joanne was a wonderful friend and valued friendship; remarkably she maintained many close friendships for over 50 years with her friends and roommates from her college years.  She adored cats; her current furry companion was Tucker.  Joanne loved her grandchildren and cherished the time they spent together.  She was immensely proud of their accomplishments in music and theater and was in every audience, near the front, for all of their performances.

Joanne is survived by her loving husband Thomas Dewey; her son, Ted (Andrea) Dewey; and her grandchildren, Logan, Alexa, and Adrienne.  She was preceded in death by her parents.

Private family services will be held.  She will be laid to rest at White Chapel Memorial Cemetery in Troy.  During this difficult time please make sure to reach out to the family with a card, phone call or online condolence.
