Harold K. Mercer

October 9, 1940 — October 17, 2023

Harold K. Mercer, age 83, of Northville, formerly a longtime resident of Windsor, Ontario (Canada); Troy, Michigan; and Fort Myers, Florida, passed away October 17, 2023. He was born on October 9, 1940 in Windsor, Ontario (Canada); son of Harold E. and Elizabeth (Gemmell) Mercer. Harold graduated from Forster Secondary School in Windsor in 1959. He continued his education at Queen’s College, where he earned a degree in accounting. Harold was united in marriage with the love of his life, Margaret Matthews, on October 26, 1963, and they were just shy of celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.

An avid golfer, Harold played as often as he could and in many leagues throughout the years. He was a founding member of the Tommy Burlington Invitational Golf Tournament and served as President for over 25 years. He loved being around the golf course and worked as a starter
at Sanctuary Golf Course and Sylvan Glen Golf Course in his retirement. A large part of Harold’s life revolved around hockey. He played goalie, coached his sons, and was faithfully devoted to his team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was also a huge fan of the Michigan Wolverines and all of his children’s teams. Harold loved the time he spent with his family and especially adored his grandchildren. He was very proud of their accomplishments and supported them in all of their extracurricular activities. Harold enjoyed traveling and taking road trips with his wife and extended family, especially with his sister- and brother-in-law, Bev and Gerry Russette. Each year, he looked forward to the weekend-long family reunion at “The Farm” along the banks of Lake Erie. Harold was a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend who will be missed by all who loved him.

Harold worked as an accountant and executive at Wilson Dairy in Detroit for over 20 years, then as an executive with Chamberlain Realtors in Birmingham for 15 years before retiring.

Harold is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Mercer; his children Brad (Kari) Mercer, Scott (Deirdre) Mercer, and Loriane (Aaron) Brown; his grandchildren Emily (Kyle) Krajewski, Alexander Mercer, Abby Mercer, Brady Mercer, Jack Mercer, Cameron Mercer, Delaney Mercer, Connor Brown, Teagan Brown, and Beckett Brown; and his brother-in-law Jack Page. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Caulley Elizabeth; his parents; his sister and brother-in-law, Marie and Art Usher; and his sister, Ethel Page.

The family will hold a private service and is planning a celebration of Harold’s life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial contributions to the Lewy Body Dementia Association (lbda.org) or Meals on Wheels (mealsonwheelsamerica.org).
