Geraldine Dorais

Geraldine Dorais, age 86, of Canton, formerly of Northville and South Lyon, passed away on December 10, 2023. She was born on April 21, 1937 in Detroit, Michigan; daughter of Stephen and Ethel (Jozsa) Smolnik. She graduated from Dearborn High School, class of 1955.

Geraldine had a long and successful career in the postal service. Starting as a postal clerk in 1965 in Dearborn, she worked her way up to become a Postal Supervisor in 1971. Her dedication and hard work led to further promotions, and in 1979, she achieved a significant milestone by becoming one of the first female postmasters for Dundee. Finally, after a fulfilling career, Geraldine retired as the postmaster for the South Lyon Post Office.

Geraldine's active involvement in various organizations and her commitment to community service highlight her dedication to making a positive impact beyond her professional career. Her roles as the President of the Dundee Women’s Civic Association, a board director and vice president of the National Association Postmasters of the United States, Wayne County Branch, a member of the Board of Directors with the South Lyon Chamber of Commerce, and Vice President with the Dundee Business and Professional People demonstrate her leadership and engagement in both local and professional communities.

She was also a world traveler, having visited over 50 different locations. Her greatest joy was spent at her timeshare in Orlando, Florida.  When she wasn’t traveling, Geraldine liked to spend time in her garden. She was a loving and dedicated mother, sister, grandmother, and great grandmother.

Geraldine is survived by her sons, Stephen (Nancy) Dorais, William “Billy” (Janet) Dorais, and Chuck (Laura) Dorais; her sister Mary Innes; her grandsons, Brett Wysocki, Eric Dorais, and Christopher (Shanin) Dorais; and her great grandchildren, Bella and Ashton. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Betty Swartz.

A private family service will be held at a later date.
