George T. Dwelley, Jr., age 80, longtime resident of Northville, passed away on September 5, 2024. He was born on July 4, 1944 in Detroit, Michigan, son of George T. and Dorothy (Hanna) Dwelley, Sr. He graduated from Seaholm High School in Birmingham; class of 1966. He completed his undergraduate studies at Oakland University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology. George continued his education at Wayne State University where he earned a master’s degree in labor relations. He proudly served his country in the United States Army. George was united in marriage to Vicki Cunningham on November 14, 1981; they spent 42 years devoted to their love.
George worked for the State of Michigan for over 37 years as an Investigator with Child Protective Services and for the Family First Program in Wayne County. He was very active with the UAW Local 6000 State Employee Division acting as a steward and steward at large. Following his retirement in 2009, he continued his involvement with the union.
George was a member of both First Presbyterian Church of Northville and Plymouth. Active in the church throughout the years, he directed youth musicals, served as a deacon, went on a mission to Chihuahua, Mexico and helped with disaster relief for Hurricane Katrina. George also volunteered his time with the Northville Lions Club and served as vice president for the Northville Swim Club. He was a proud and active member of AA for over 30 years.
George was happiest when he was outdoors, no matter the season. He loved tending to his large vegetable garden, which he cared for with dedication. One of his favorite pastimes was fishing, where he found peace and contentment. George had a deep appreciation for the arts. In his younger years, he was an active member of the Birmingham Village Players, and he performed in dinner theater alongside his parents. He also graced the stage at the Cherry Hill Theater. George possessed a vast knowledge of music, with a particular love for classic rock. Recently, he and his wife attended a Righteous Brothers concert, a highlight for them both. Although he seldom shared it, George was a talented pianist and singer.
An avid reader, he enjoyed thrilling novels by authors like Stephen King and James Patterson. He also had a fondness for action movies, especially the James Bond series. George was a devoted Red Wings hockey fan, closely following the team during their winning era. Born on the Fourth of July, he always cherished a good fireworks show, whether as a spectator or as the pyrotechnician himself.
A true homebody, George found joy in spending time at home with his family. He was an incredibly supportive father, attending all his children's extracurricular activities and sporting events. George led by example, teaching his children by doing things first and then guiding them to follow. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother, and friend, and his legacy of love will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
George is survived by his loving wife Vicki Dwelley; his children, Kourtney Johnson, Jordan Dwelley, Carter Johnson, and Brayden Dwelley; and his sister Rhys Dwelley. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Stephen Dwelley, his sister-in-law Xinh Dwelley, and his cousin Katherine Hunt Robison.
A memorial service will be held Friday, September 20, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. with a time of gathering beginning at 10 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Plymouth, 701 Church Street, Plymouth.
