Gary T. Dekun, age 73, of Plymouth, passed away on January 18, 2021. He was born on September 8, 1947 in Highland Park, Michigan; son of John and Jean (Piotrowski) Dekun. Gary was raised in Detroit and graduated high school in Highland Park. He proudly served in the United States Army during Vietnam. Gary was married to Gail Bennett Dekun for 17 years until her death on September 7, 2020.
Gary was a self-employed carpenter for many years. He loved his craft and was a very skilled carpenter, helping his family and friends with small projects when he was able. Gary and his sons built his home in Plymouth from the foundation to the roof and everything in between. This was a project that lasted about 15 years, but when finished it was a huge accomplishment. Gary taught his sons a skilled trade, but he was more excited about the free labor they provided. He later went to work for Exhibit Works; he retired in 2012.
Gary loved being outside and would often be found either boating or on a jet ski. When he was younger, he built a boat with his father which gave him the idea for free labor. He enjoyed going to his parent’s cottage on Lake Saint Clair. Gary was very generous with his lawn mowing skills; often riding around on his John Deere cutting the neighbor’s grass.
He is survived by his sons, John Dekun IV and Michael (Karen) Dekun; his grandsons, John Dekun V, Jacob Dekun, and Noah Dekun; and his nieces, Suzanne and Barbara. He is also survived by Gail Dekun’s family. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and his brothers, John Dekun III and Robert Dekun.
A private family service will be held. He will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions would be appreciated to the American Cancer Society , 20450 Civic Center Drive, Southfield, MI 48076.
