Richard F. Cooper, Md

March 2, 1924 — October 28, 2019

Dr. Richard F. Cooper, age 95, longtime resident of Northville, passed away October 28,
2019. He was born March 2, 1924 in Lansing, Michigan; son of Herbert and Cydna (Free)
Cooper. He was united in marriage to Betty Jane Brown on October 19, 1946, they spent 73
years devoted to one another as husband and wife.

Richard graduated from Moores Park High School in Lansing, MI and earned an undergraduate
degree from Michigan State College. He continued his education at Wayne University College
of Medicine and graduated in 1948. Dr. Cooper did his internship at Rochester General Hospital
in Rochester, NY and his residency at Harper Hospital in Detroit from 1954-1955. He worked as
a radiologist for many years, most recently he worked with MRI of Southfield. For much of his
career he worked with a medical staffing agency and traveled all over the United States. He was
medically licensed in 26 states and worked for Penn State University Hospital in Danville, PA
and Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, WI among other hospitals and medical
facilities. Richard proudly served his country as a Colonel with more than 41 years of total
service with the Michigan Air National Guard as a flight surgeon. In 1985, he retired as the State
Air Surgeon for the State of Michigan.

Dick was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Northville for many years. He was also a
member of multiple medical societies, as well as the aviation fraternity, the Quiet Birdmen. A
voracious reader, he loved and hated politics. Dr. Cooper was constantly continuing his
education and reading medical journals. He was incredibly dedicated to his career and loved
what he did as a doctor. Dick was an avid pilot and enjoyed flying. He owned his own airplane
and was awarded the FAA Master Pilot Award which is given for 50 years of consecutive safe
flying. Dick truly adored his wife and was a wonderful friend to many.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Jane Brown; his close friends, Al and Brenda
Smith, Ed and Barbara Funke, Dennis and Jill Engerer, and cousins, Tom and Rose Miller.

The visitation will be held Friday, November 1, 2019 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. A funeral
service will be held Saturday, November 2, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Casterline Funeral Home, 122
W. Dunlap, Northville. He will be laid to rest at Wisconsin Memorial Park in Brookfield,
Wisconsin.
