Bette Lynn Nowka

Age 84, a longtime resident of Northville, passed away on August 17, 2022. She was born on January 30, 1938 in Marquette, Michigan; daughter of Walfrid and Martha (Piirto) Tomola. Bette Lynn graduated from Dearborn High School in 1956 as the Valedictorian. In high school, she was honored as the homecoming and prom queen and was the lead in school plays. Bette Lynn was known for her outgoing personality and for her beauty, both inside and out. She received a Bachelor of Education from University of Michigan, became a teacher and later relished many years as an antique dealer. Bette Lynn was united in marriage to James L. Nowka on December 16, 1960; they spent over 61 years devoted to one another.

Bette Lynn was very involved with her community. She served as a Cub Scout Leader, President of the Winchester PTA, a member of the League of Women Voters, served on the Curriculum Council, and was a member of Questers. Bette Lynn was also a dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church for over 35 years.

She loved to sing, she loved daisies, she loved Bible Study Fellowship, she loved to read, she loved her years at U of M, she loved Christmas, she loved Jeopardy, she loved crossword puzzles, she loved good wine, she loved Michigan State, she loved playing Bridge, she loved treasure hunting for  antiques, she loved long walks, she loved her home, she loved the Detroit Tigers, she loved praying, she loved traveling, she loved watching sports, she loved spreading joy, she loved her sister, she loved America, she loved freedom and liberty, she loved to laugh,  she loved listening and encouraging. Mostly, she loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, her children, her grandchildren and her Jimmy (Mr. Wonderful).

Bette Lynn is survived by her husband James L. Nowka; her children, Erich (Melinda Dimitroff) Nowka, Sara (Joseph) Hardig, Dirk (Kristen) Nowka, and Julie (Chris) Willerer; her sister, Susan (James) Dougherty; and her grandchildren, Sophie, Anna, Jenny, Luke, Abby, Chloe, Lily, Avery, Jake, and Charlotte.  She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial Visitation will be held Monday, August 22, 2022 from 9:30 am until 11:00 am with a Celebration of Life beginning at 11:00 am at Casterline Funeral Home, 122 West Dunlap, Northville. She will be laid to rest at Rural Hill Cemetery in Northville.
