Bernice R. Newhouse

Bernice R. Newhouse, age 92, a longtime resident of Livonia, passed away on June 18, 2019. She was born on September 9, 1926 in Detroit, Michigan; daughter of Joseph and Rose (nee Dettloff) Sperkowski. She graduated from Northville High School; Class of 1944.  Bernice was united in marriage to Raymond E. Newhouse at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church on February 9, 1946; they spent 60 loving years together until his death January 19, 2007.

Bernice worked as a bank teller with the Northville Branch of Manufacturer’s National Bank, now known as Comerica, for over 40 years.  She was a devoted member of St. Michael the Archangel in Livonia since 1950.  Bernice was a dedicated member of the St. Michael Choir and a member of the Silver Liners singing group that performed for many nursing homes.  She loved to sew and enjoyed cooking.  Bernice traveled extensively with her husband and sometimes her son, throughout the world and took multiple cruises.  She visited every state in the union, and her adventures took her to places like Europe, the Panama Canal, and Japan.  Bernice was a loving and caring wife, mother, sister, and friend.

She is survived by her sons, Raymond (Debbie) Newhouse II and Michael A. Newhouse.  She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her siblings, George Sperkowski , Leonard Sperkowski , Edmund Sperkowski , Joseph Sperkowski , Norman Sperkowski, Raymond Sperkowski, Dorothy Riley Baker, and Harold Sperkowski.

The visitation will be held Friday, June 21, 2019 from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Casterline Funeral Home, 122 W. Dunlap, Northville.  A funeral mass will be held Saturday, June 22, 2019 at 11:00 a.m., in state beginning at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 11441 Hubbard, Livonia.
