Barbara A. Gotberg, age 85, of Northville, passed away May 4, 2023. She was born on December 21, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan; daughter of Harry and Adeline (Williams) Berry. She was united in marriage to Charles E. Gotberg on April 12, 1958; they were devoted to each other for 55 years until his death on December 8, 2013.
Barbara grew up in Detroit and graduated from Cooley High School with the class of 1956. She was a hard worker all her life, starting as a teenager at Neisner’s Dime Store and then at Kroger’s for many years. Working as the Treasurer for American Manufacturing, Inc., a company she and her husband founded in 1971, was very gratifying to her. She managed all the accounting, bookkeeping, and administrative tasks, while handling the day-to-day financial stress of running a business. She successfully retired in 2004.
Barbara has been an active member of Edgewood Country Club since 1983. She was a past President of the Edgewood Women’s Golf Association. Barbara enjoyed playing golf and played well enough to get a “breezer” every now and again. That’s when you hit the ball straight enough and far enough down the fairway to be able to catch a “breeze” while driving the cart to it.
Barbara loved to entertain. She hosted many holiday parties and fish boils, and she socialized with neighbors wherever she lived. She started a stock club and a card club with the neighborhood ladies, and later she was on the condo association social committee. She also enjoyed dining out with her husband and friends, and especially enjoyed the lobster at Joe Muer’s. Barbara was an avid reader and a Fox News junkie; she loved to talk politics, as long as you agreed with her.
Barbara was a wonderful grandma whose greatest delight was spoiling her grandchildren. On overnight visits, they would all watch TV together and eat ice cream and candy in bed. Gramma Barb also passed on her love of reading and golf to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, for which they are still appreciative. Barbara was a woman of integrity, a good citizen, a helpful neighbor, and a loyal friend. She will be missed.
She is survived by her children, Chuck (Mary) Gotberg, Jim Gotberg, and Christina Gotberg; her grandchildren, Julie (Eric) Dufort and Brian (Nicole) Gotberg; her great grandchildren, Leonidas, Kingston, and Elizabeth; her brother-in-law John (Carol) Gotberg; and many nieces and nephews. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Bill, Bob, and Jack Berry.
