Audrey M. Becker

June 11, 1926 — September 30, 2012

Age 86, longtime area resident, passed away September 30, 2012 in Novi. She was born June 11, 1926 in Detroit, the daughter of Robert M. and Viola (nee Corbett) Book. She married Wilfred Charles Becker on June 14, 1947. Audrey was a teacher, librarian and administrator in Livonia Public Schools, retiring in 1985. A lifelong Methodist, she sang in church choirs for many years. She moved to Florida in 1985, where she was a founding member of the George Young Memorial United Methodist Church in Palm Harbor. She was active in the Highland Lakes Rotary Club and taught English as a Second Language to a diverse group of students. In 2005, Audrey moved to Fox Run Village in Novi, where she was an enthusiastic member of the Foxy Grandmas chorus, and volunteered as a mentor in Brightmoor School. She was an avid reader and an eager world traveler, who delighted in time spent at the family cottage on Lake Huron, near Rogers City. She is survived by her children, Margaret (David) Gilbert, Gary (Stacey) Becker, Cristie Becker, MD, and Merilee (Robert) Zane; her sister, Barbara Gault; ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother, Robert M. Book, Jr. A celebration of Audrey's life will be held Saturday, October 13, 2012 at 11am at First United Methodist Church, 777 West Eight Mile Rd, Northville. Attendees are invited to wear red, Audrey's favorite color. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wilfred and Audrey Becker Scholarship in Industrial Design, Fund Office, Wayne State University, 5475 Woodward Ave., Detroit, MI 48202, or to the Nature Conservancy, Great Lakes Area, www.nature.org
