Age 75 of Northville, passed away September 23, 2012. He was born on April 18, 1937, son of Bernard and Stella (nee Myers) Babel. Bernard was united in marriage to Ila Jane Hawes on November 6, 1976; they spent 36 loving years together. Bernie was a devout catholic and graduated from St. Theresa in 1955. He then went on to serve his country in The United States Army from 1958 to 1960 when he was honorably discharged. Bernie went on to become a hard working and valued employee of The Detroit News up until his retirement after 34 years. He was an avid reader, enjoyed crossword puzzles, bowling, hunting, and golf. He loved spending time at his resort in the Upper Peninsula fishing, building campfires, making s'mores and playing with his grandchildren. He had a kind heart and was very generous in giving his love to his family. He is survived by his wife, Ila Jane; his children Jeff Weber, Ken (Barb) Weber, Mike Weber, and Amy (Gary) Wuerfel; his siblings, Catherine (Steve) Bizek, Jim (Judi) Babel, Charlie (Sue) Babel, and Carol (Bill) Muir; and his grandchildren, Jennifer, Samantha, Neil, Kayla, Ian, Trevor, Jack, Calvin, Paige, Kendall, Mitchell, and Fiona. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be held Thursday, September 27, 2012 from 2-8pm with a Scripture Service at 7pm at Casterline Funeral Home, 122 West Dunlap, Northville. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, September 28, 2012 at 10am, instate at 9:30am, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 133 Orchard, Northville. He will be laid to rest at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly. Memorial contributions would be appreciated to a charity of the giver's choice.
