Freemont Edward Karhu July 15, 1930 to July 31, 2014 Freemont was born in Detroit and moved to Redford Township in 6th grade. He graduated from Redford Union High School in 1949. He was drafted into the army in 1951 and fought for our country in Korea. He shared many stories of life in the trenches and the brotherhood he shared with his comrades. Freemont has a brother, Milo, and two sisters, Ethel (Donald Good) and Tamar (James Harkness). Milo lives in Traverse City. Ethel lives in Wixom and Tamar lives in Stayner, Ontario. After his discharge from the army Freemont went to work for the Township of Redford where he worked for the water department until his retirement in 1992. Golf was Freemonts passion. He had a standing weekly golf day with friends for many years and also played on a softball team. Freemonts greatest love as far as sports was his beloved "Detroit Tigers". He was a dedicated fan and never missed a game. The love of his life is Mary Lou (Ware) - his wife of nearly 45 years. They were married on August 25, 1969 at Our Lady Of Victory Church in Northville, MI. Freemont loved to help out at Roosevelt Elementary School in Redford in Mary Lous kindergarten classroom where she taught for 41 years. He went on field trips with the classes and played Santa every year for the children. It was one of his favorite Christmas traditions. First a son, brother and uncle, then a soldier and veteran, he was a devoted husband and son-in-law to Mary Lous parents and grandparents. He was loved and respected by his family. In recent years, Freemont and Mary Lou have taken great pride and pleasure in their home in Livonia where they have beautiful gardens filled with trees, shrubs, perennials, and wildlife. Freemont has been kept very busy with weeding, mowing, and keeping all of the critters who frequent their yard fed and happy. Even a large family of deer considers the Karhu yard their home. A kind and gentle man, he will be missed. The visitation will be held Saturday, August 2, 2014 from Noon until 2 p.m. with a funeral service at 2 p.m. at Casterline Funeral Home, 122 W. Dunlap, Northville. Mr. Karhu will be laid to rest at Rural Hill Cemetery in Northville. A luncheon at Archie's, 30471 Plymouth Rd., Livonia will follow the committal prayers at the cemetery. The family would appreciate memorial contributions to Michigan Humane Society, 30300 Telegraph Rd., Ste. 220, Bingham Farms, MI 48025.
