Lena Sokolov Shadko was born in the Bronx, New York, in 1916 to Jacob and Julia. With her two sisters, Vera and Sophie, they moved to Detroit where her father worked as an inventor at Packard Motors. Lena received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Wayne University and taught in the Detroit Public Schools. She married the love of her life, Ivan Shadko, in 1941. During their 69 years of marriage they had two children, Frederick and Jacqueline. Late in life, Lena became a technical translator at Chrysler and American Motors. She loved languages and she loved learning. She spoke French, Spanish, Italian, and Portugese in a pinch. They moved from Troy to Novi in 2008. Ivan preceded her in death in 2010 at age 95. Lena passed away peacefully August 24, 2014 in Novi, Michigan She is survived by her son Frederick Shadko, who is a Northville Township Trustee, and her daughter, Dr. Jacqueline Shadko, President of OCC Orchard Ridge. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations would be appreciated to the Shadko Family Endowed Scholarship Fund through the Oakland Community College Foundation, 2480 Opdyke Rd., Bloomfield Hills, MI 48304 The visitation will be held Thursday, August 28, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. until Noon with a funeral service at Noon at Casterline Funeral Home, 122 W. Dunlap, Northville.
