Dorene A. Pentoney

November 29, 1919 — December 7, 2015

Dorene A. Pentoney, age 96, of Plymouth, formerly of Detroit passed away peacefully December 7, 2015. She was born November 29, 1919 in Lansing, Michigan; daughter of Ward W. and Ruth Ann (nee McQueen) Wood. She graduated from Michigan State in 1940 with a Bachelor Degree in Social Work which was quite an accomplishment for a woman in that era. Dorene was united in marriage to James B. Pentoney on May 15, 1942; they spent 48 loving years together until his death in 1990. Dorene was a devoted homemaker. She was an active member of Newburg United Methodist Church; she served as Past President of United Methodist Women, a Sunday School Teacher, and was a part of various committees. She was a Girl Scout Leader for many years volunteering as the leader of her daughters’ troops. Dorene was an avid reader; mysteries were her favorite and it was not unusual for her to read a book in a day. She enjoyed square dancing, doing jigsaw puzzles, and playing cards. She shared her card playing with her family teaching her children and grandchildren to play the games she loved, especially pinochle. Dorene’s summers were spent up north with family at her home away from home on Elbow Lake. She and her husband travelled extensively throughout the United States, South America, and Europe with NOMADS. Most recently she had found great joy in singing with the choir at Independence Village. Dorene is survived by her loving children, Brace (Carol), Jim (Caryl), Tom (Carol) Ruth, Diane (the late Jim), Bonnie (Tom), and Ward; her grandchildren, Kevin, Sarah (Kevin), Darren, Adam (Traci), Jessica, Coryne, Danielle, and Natalie; her great grandchildren, Olivia, Sidney, Samuel, Wesley, Elizabeth, Nolan, Max, and Killian. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and her siblings, Allen Wood and Ward Wood. A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 19, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Newburg United Methodist Church, 36500 Ann Arbor Trail, Livonia. Rev. Steven McCoy will officiate the service. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate memorial contributions to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association 3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago, IL 60674. 1242
