Jean E. Sherman, age 97, of L’Anse, Michigan, formerly of Northville, Charlevoix, and St. Clair, passed away on June 11, 2017. She was born April 4, 1920 in Novi, Michigan; daughter of Duncan and Isabelle (nee Watt) Chisholm. She attended Farmington High School in Farmington, Michigan. Jean was united in marriage to Howard M. Sherman on October 25, 1939; they spent 44 loving years as husband and wife until his death on May 21, 1984. Jean was a devoted homemaker. She also worked for Northville Public Schools as a Bus Driver, retiring after many years. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Northville. Jean loved camping; during her life she camped extensively in the United States and Canada; including spending winters in Florida and visiting family in Arizona. She and her husband turned one of their favorite hobbies into a business and owned a camping resort just outside of Charlevoix for 10 years. Jean was very talented at weaving; among the beautiful pieces she made were throws, scarves, placemats, and jackets which she would often share with family. She met with a weavers group in Sarnia, belonged to a co-op in Charlevoix where she displayed her weaving, and participated in many craft shows. Jean was an avid reader; she liked general fiction and books about Scotland and her heritage. For many years she took part in the Walk the Mackinac Bridge on Labor Day and received many patches for her effort. The last time she did the walk she was over the age of 80 and was accompanied by her granddaughter Michelle. Jean’s family was very important to her; she loved them dearly and cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren. She valued her connection to her extended family as well, and enjoyed keeping in touch with them through the lost art of letter writing. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Jean is survived by her loving children, Isabelle (Richard) Firestone, Howard (Pamela) Sherman, Alice Ax, Jon Sherman, and Steven (Heather Stewner) Sherman; her siblings, Cameron Chisholm, Mary Jane Hitter, and John (Carol) Chisholm; 13 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her son Ronald Sherman, her grandson Charles Sherman, her parents, 2 sisters and 3 brothers. Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 14, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held Thursday, June 15, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Casterline Funeral Home, 122 West Dunlap, Northville. Pastor Jon Wilkes from First Baptist Church of Northville will officiate the service. She will be laid to rest next to her husband at Rural Hill Cemetery in Northville. The family would appreciate memorial contributions to First Baptist Church, 217 N. Wing, Northville, Michigan 48167.
