Barbara J. Smith

Barbara Jane Smith, age 64, of Northville passed away peacefully June 14, 2017. She was born January 13, 1953 in Detroit, Michigan; daughter of Douglas and Irene (nee Hurst) Moore.  Barbara grew up in London, Ontario and Kingston, Ontario. She was united in marriage to Gary M. Smith on June 26, 1976; they were dedicated to each other for over 40 years. She earned her Bachelor Degree from Queens University in Kingston and then her Master’s Degree from Madonna University in Livonia, Michigan. Barbara has made Michigan her home for 37 years; mostly living in Northville and Farmington Hills. She was a College Professor with Oakland Community College for 21 years; she taught Computer Science. Barbara enjoyed playing bridge and card games with family and friends. She loved listening to music and was an avid reader. Barbara looked forward to vacationing at the family cottage in Forest, Ontario, Canada. She was a fun-loving, witty, spunky, and devoted wife, mother, sister, and friend. Barbara is survived by her husband Gary; her daughters, Bonnie M. Smith and Beverly (fiancé John Gamrat); her sister Joanne (William) Marshall; her niece Jennifer (Alan) Grandy; and her great niece and nephew, Reese and Rowan Grandy. She was preceded in death by her parents. Visitation will be held Thursday, June 15, 2017 from 4pm until 8pm at Casterline Funeral Home, 122 West Dunlap, Northville. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 16, 2017 at 11am with visitation beginning at 10:30am at the First United Methodist Church, 777 W. Eight Mile, Northville. Rev. Dr. Douglas W. Vernon will officiate the service. She will be laid to rest at Beechwood Cemetery in Forest, Ontario, Canada.
