Cindy Carroll-Shier, age 58, a longtime resident of Northville, formerly of West Bloomfield, passed away October 17, 2017. She was born November 21, 1958 in Detroit, Michigan; daughter of Robert Kenneth and Mary Helen (nee Townsend) Carroll. She graduated from West Bloomfield High School; Class of 1977. She continued her education at Grand Valley State University where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education. Cindy was united in marriage to John W. Shier, Jr. on March 11, 1989 and they spent 28 years devoted to one another. Cindy worked as a manager of a group home for patients with traumatic brain injuries. She also worked for a durable medical equipment company and pharmacist. Cindy never missed an opportunity to help a stranger. She volunteered extensively with Civic Concern in Northville where she helped with food distribution. She also participated in organizing fundraisers for ALSAC and JDF. She was a member of Oak Pointe Church. Cindy was incredibly brave and used her experiences in life to empower others. She loved her family and cherished the time they spent together. Cindy especially adored visiting her nephews in North Carolina. She loved her hairy dog people, Smokey, Kody, Bear, and Heidi. She enjoyed gardening; she grew beautiful flowers and liked taking care of her home and yard. She also enjoyed listening to jazz and attending jazz concerts. Cindy blessed her family with many valuable lessons; her beautiful spirit, smile, sense of humor, and faith will be missed. Cindy is survived by her beloved husband, John W. Shier, Jr.; her sister, Celeste Carroll (Schmidtke); her nephews, Dylan Schmidtke and Ryan Schmidtke. She was also loved by many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. The visitation will be held Monday, October 23, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. at Casterline Funeral Home, 122 W. Dunlap, Northville. Pastor Bob Shirock from Oak Pointe Church in Novi will officiate the service. She will be laid to rest at Mt. Hope Catholic Cemetery in Port Huron.
